The Chitrakoot Falls is a natural waterfall located to the west of Jagdalpur, in Bastar district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh on the Indravati River. The height of the falls is about 30 metres (98 ft).It is the widest fall in India, about 300 metres (980 ft). Because of its width and wide spread during the monsoon season, it is often called the Niagara Falls of India.
This spectacular fall is formed when the river indravati abruptly collapses into a 100 feet deep cavern. the mouth of the fall, when in full profusion, is over 1,000 feet wide. Chitrakot is a horse-shoe shaped waterfall, best seen during and after the monsoon, between july and october. if you want to take photographs, the light is best in the afternoons.
The best time to visit the falls is during the months of October to February. Even though the falls get quite narrower by this time, it doesn’t take away from the wild, elemental beauty of these cascading waters. However if you are keen to enjoy the wild ferocity of the falls, the months of July till September would suit you better. During the winter months, the scenic beauty of this place is especially beautiful. There are boats which take you right up to the falls. And if the angle of the sun is right, you can even enjoy a colourful display of double rainbows.
The falls is one of the favourite picnic spots. In the mornings you can find variety of people (from photographers, painters to joggers and yoga practitioners) gathered around this place. There are government owned lodges and camp sites located nearby.
